Why Headcovers Are Worth Caring About

They started as protection for expensive clubs. Somewhere along the way they became the most personal thing in the bag.

Headcovers exist for a practical reason: drivers, fairway woods and putters are the most expensive clubs in the bag, and they bang against each other with every step and every cart ride. A good cover keeps the crown of your driver from looking like it lost a fight.

But ask any golfer about their headcovers and you won't hear about protection. You'll hear about the one they got at a bucket-list course, the knitted one that's older than their swing, or the leather set they saved up for. Headcovers are the one piece of golf gear where personality is the point.

Materials are the main decision. Leather ages beautifully and lasts for years but asks for a little care. Knit and wool covers are the classics — soft, quiet, and full of character. Modern synthetics are the most forgiving in wet weather. There's no wrong answer; there's only the one that suits how you play.

Fit matters more than people expect. A driver cover that's too loose falls off in the cart; one that's too tight slows you down on every tee. The best covers slip on and off with one hand and stay put the rest of the time.

Our advice: protect the clubs, then pick the covers that make you smile when you unzip the bag. Golf is hard enough — the small joys count.
